Hello again from Lisbon!

It feels surreal that I'm celebrating my second Christmas in Lisbon. My first one, back in 2020 during the pandemic, framed how I saw the city. It took a while to reset my perspective and appreciate Lisbon afresh.

One noticeable transformation was the Christmas Markets, shuttered in December 2020. Now, they adorn the city in abundance, each a delightful spectacle. Brimming with holiday cheer, delectable cuisine, artisanal crafts, and, of course, mulled wine—they're a delight to explore on foot!

The Holiday Sights

Returning to Lisbon feels like stepping into a storybook adorned with the enchantment of Christmas. The city, in all its festive splendor, exudes a warmth that embraces the soul. The twinkling lights dancing along the cobbled streets and harbors, the scent of roasted chestnuts mingling with the sea breeze, and the joyous melodies echoing from every corner—all paint a picturesque celebration. It's a delightful reunion with a place that effortlessly merges its timeless charm with the magic of the holiday season.

The Christmas Market

Reconnecting with my filmmaking group feels invigorating. During my visits to various Christmas Markets, inspiration struck—a tale emerged about a tight-knit circle of friends facing adversity, drawn together annually by the allure of the Christmas Market. Sharing this idea sparked the formation of a dedicated cast and crew. Bringing this story to life was an absolute delight, a joyous endeavor that we fervently pieced together. I'm thrilled to present it to you, hoping it brings as much joy to you as it did to us!

Hollywood to Europe (and back)

After pouring my dedication into a special project, I'm excited to unveil it—a book chronicling my travels from January 2020 to December 2022! It's called Hollywood to Europe (and back) - a Journey of Courage, Resilience, and Transformation Amidst a Global Pandemic.

Finally...

Happy 2024! Wrapping up the year on such a high note feels incredible. It all began in Athens, Greece, then shifted to a six-month stint in the UK before embarking on an eye-opening journey through the Balkans, exploring the wonders of Albania.

The upcoming year kicks off with a visit to the US to reconnect with loved ones, followed by a return to Lisbon for a couple more months. From there, it's back to the UK, again exploring the charms of north England for another six months. With my nomadic lifestyle, planning beyond that seems like a challenge, but that's part of the adventure!

Hello from Tirana, Albania!

So, I just went from a small town near the Adriatic Sea up to Tirana, the capital city of the country. What a change! I'm fully embracing it and really enjoying it.

I'm staying in a wonderful neighborhood called Blloku. The Blloku neighborhood is a vibrant area that has undergone significant transformation in recent years. Originally a restricted zone during the communist era, reserved for government officials and party elites, Blloku has evolved into a bustling hub of trendy cafes, restaurants, shops, and nightlife. Its streets are lined with colorful buildings, and fun street art, creating a lively and cosmopolitan atmosphere. Blloku is now a symbol of Tirana's modernization and a popular destination for locals and tourists alike. The best part is that it's within walking distance to my favorite coffeeshops, my gym, and all the monuments you need to see!

Pyramid of Tirana

My gym membership has paid off and I hiked up to the top of The Pyramid of Tirana, originally known as the "Enver Hoxha Museum" for an amazing view of the city. It's an iconic yet controversial architectural structure in Albania's capital city. Designed by a group of architects, led by the daughter of the former dictator Enver Hoxha, it was constructed as a monument dedicated to his legacy.

The building's unique pyramid shape and smooth exterior has undergone various transformations over the years, serving as a venue for cultural events, a nightclub, and even facing demolition discussions. It even served as a base for Nato during the 1998-99 war in neighbouring Kosovo. Eventually, the municipality decided to make it into an IT centre (called Tuto) for the young, and create a "nurturing environment for young Albanians."

The Pyramid's history reflects the country's political shifts and societal changes, making it both a striking architectural symbol and a contested piece of Albania's past.

Skanderbeg Square

One place you can't miss here is Skanderbeg Square - in the heart of Tirana. It's a vibrant and bustling public space, named after Albania's national hero, Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbeu, widely known as Skanderbeg. The square serves as a focal point for the city, surrounded by important government buildings, historic landmarks, and lively cafes. Dominated by the monumental Skanderbeg statue, the square underwent extensive renovations in recent years, transforming into a pedestrian-friendly area with fountains, green spaces, and public art installations. The Square is home to The National Theatre of Opera and Ballet of Albania, and the Natural History Museum.

Grand Park of Tirana

The Grand Park in Tirana is a sprawling urban oasis, offering respite and recreational opportunities in the bustling capital of Albania. Spanning over 230 hectares, this expansive park is a haven for nature enthusiasts, joggers, families, and anyone seeking tranquility amidst the city's vibrancy. It features lush greenery, serene pathways, artificial and natural lakes, and recreational facilities such as playgrounds, sports fields, and picnic areas. The park also houses the Botanical Garden, home to diverse plant species, and an artificial lake where visitors can rent boats and enjoy the serene surroundings. With its peaceful ambiance and a variety of activities, the Grand Park stands as a cherished retreat and a crucial part of Tirana's urban landscape.

Finally...

Well, it's goodbye to Albania and hello to Portugal - a return to one of the most favorite places I've lived during my travels. It will be a Christmas away from family and friends, but I'm looking forward to some new holiday experiences and festive moments with prior acquaintences and new friends.

For the past couple of months, I've been embracing my inner tourist, but I'm itching to reunite with my filmmaking crew and dive back into our creative projects come the new year.

I really appreciate those who have been reading this blog. Thanks for following along!

Hello from Durrës, Albania!

Albania has truly been a delightful surprise! My flight here was easy, starting in Manchester and making my way to Vienna, Austria, before finally reaching the beautiful country of Albania. After a relaxing night in Tirana, the capital city, I hopped on a quick thirty-minute Uber ride to Durrës.

I'm now staying in an Airbnb on the 11th floor of a high-rise, and the view is spectacular! I can gaze out at the Town Square and even catch a glimpse of the beautiful Adriatic Sea. It's a refreshing change from Airbnb stays in the UK. Durrës is a fairly small coastal beach town that's perfect for strolling around. There's so much to explore and enjoy here. The local restaurants are abundant and ready to be explored. As for historical sites and attractions, here are a couple I've had the pleasure of checking out:

Sphinx of Durrës

The Sphinx of Durrës, also known as Cape Square, is undeniably one of the most enchanting spots in Durrës for catching a breathtaking sunset. This modern architectural marvel was completed in 2015 and beautifully emulates the iconic sphinx in Egypt.

Remarkably, this inviting public space came to life in just a few short months, thanks to the incredible craftsmanship that went into its construction. It's not just a static structure – it's a place where you can sit back, climb around, or enjoy some playful moments. It's also a popular backdrop for music videos and wedding photos, adding a touch of magic to special occasions.

From this vantage point, you can gaze out at the remarkable transformation of the once desolate promenade into a thriving hub that's increasingly drawing both tourists and locals alike. The area is adorned with great restaurants and shops, and it truly comes alive, especially as the night falls, creating a vibrant and lively atmosphere.

All in all, the Sphinx of Durrës is a lovely place to unwind and enjoy the beauty of the setting sun.

Durrës Amphitheater

The Durrës Amphitheater is a magnificent ancient Roman structure here in Durrës. Dating back to the 2nd century AD, it is one of the largest amphitheaters in the Balkan region, boasting a capacity to accommodate up to 20,000 spectators.

With its impressive semicircular design, grand entrances, and intricate architectural details, the Durrës Amphitheater serves as a captivating reminder of the ancient world.

The Durrës Amphitheater was a venue for various events and spectacles during ancient times. It hosted gladiatorial games, which were popular forms of entertainment in the Roman Empire. The amphitheater also witnessed theatrical performances, including plays and musical shows, providing a platform for artistic expression. Additionally, public gatherings, religious ceremonies, and political events might have taken place within its walls.

Venetian Tower

The Venetian Tower of Durrës stands as a historic emblem of the city's rich past. Dating back to the late 15th century, during the Venetian rule of the region, this imposing tower once served as a key defensive structure against seafaring threats. With its distinctive cylindrical design and robust stone construction, it offers a glimpse into the maritime history of Durrës.

Finally...

Durrës has been absolutely fantastic, but I'm gearing up for an exciting change as I head to Tirana for the entire month of November. Being the capital city, I'm sure the experience will be a bit different, and I can't wait to dive into all the new adventures and sights it has to offer.

After my wonderful Albanian adventure, my next stop is Portugal for a few months. This will mark my second Christmas spent there, and I'm really looking forward to reuniting with the friends I made during my memorable 10-month stay back in 2021!
