Hello from Leeds, England!

The month of July has been fantastic! Throughout the month, I had the chance to embark on a couple exciting day trips - one of the best things about being here in England. The weather has been comfortable and I've really be enjoying the cooler, pleasant temperatures, despite some rainy days. My Airbnb has quickly became my home away from home, and I got the daily bus ride and schedules down pat.

It's midsummer and I love spending most every day down by the docks. I'm at home near the water, and it was so much fun to watch the annual Leeds Waterfront Festival this year. From crazy canoe races, to indulging in festive food trucks, the docks are the perfect place for an unforgettable summer event such as this.

Leeds Waterfront Festival

It's billed as the Best Weekend of the Year! The Leeds Waterfront Festival was held on Saturday and Sunday, July 1st and 2nd and is a fun-packed weekend of activities at Leeds Dock and Granary Wharf. There are dragon boats, kayaking, street foods, and a fun fair.

Holding this event near the canal makes it really special and extra festive!

Day Trip to Knaresborough

Knaresborough is a charming town in the beautiful countryside, and about a one hour train trip from Leeds. Like all the towns here in north England, it is steeped in history and boasts a rich tapestry of architectural wonders and captivating landscapes. A short walk up the hill leads you to Knaresborough Castle, perched atop a dramatic cliff overlooking the meandering River Nidd. The river provides a tranquil setting for boat rides and walks along its banks. The town's cobbled streets are lined with quaint shops, inviting cafes, and traditional pubs. Another architectural marvel in Knaresborough is the viaduct, an impressive railway structure that spans across the river, contributing to the town's unique character.

The highlights of my day were canoeing up and down the river, wandering around the castle, eating some good food, and enjoying a scoop of delicious ice cream!

Day Trip to Hebden Bridge

Another day trip brought me to Hebden Bridge, a picturesque town located in the Calder Valley. Renowned for its stunning natural beauty, Hebden Bridge is a haven for artists, nature enthusiasts, and history lovers alike. The town is characterized by its charming stone buildings, narrow winding streets, and the iconic arched bridge that spans the River Calder. With a vibrant arts and music scene, numerous galleries, and independent shops, Hebden Bridge exudes a creative and bohemian atmosphere.

Finally...

So far, the summer has been going great. I'm feeling more comfortable here, getting to know the area, both in Leeds and also the surrounding North and West Yorkshire areas of England.

My days are occupied honing my screen acting skills, while also working on my YouTube videos and posting on other social media platforms. As summer gradually comes to a close, thoughts of my next destination after Leeds begin to surface, and I've decided to return to Liverpool for the whole month of September. Beyond that, my plans are taking shape as I prepare to venture into a new, unexplored location in the Balkans! The anticipation is simply exhilarating!

Hello from Leeds, England!

Hello from Leeds! I've made my way back to this vibrant city, and even though it's just a short 45-mile journey from Manchester, the process of packing up and relocating, no matter the distance, always feels like a significant and transformative experience for me.

Fortunately, my allergies are well under control, and as summer takes hold, I'm enjoying the pleasant weather. While warm days aren't in abundance, I must admit that I do miss the luxury of air conditioning. Typically, July tends to cool down a bit, but we might see some warmer days in August. Only time will tell how the temperatures unfold throughout the summer season.

Returning to Leeds brings a sense of familiarity, as I'm staying at the same Airbnb as last year. It's comforting to be surrounded by the same environment. However, I've decided to switch up my co-working space this time around. I've chosen a new location down by "the docks" here in Leeds.

Leeds Dock, previously known as Clarence Dock, has flourished into a bustling waterfront destination that harmoniously combines culture, leisure, and a strong sense of community. This revitalized area has transformed into a vibrant hub where one can find an array of shops, restaurants, bars, and entertainment venues. With its idyllic waterfront setting, Leeds Dock offers a delightful atmosphere, inviting visitors to revel in breathtaking views, enjoy leisurely walks, and partake in numerous events and activities throughout the year.

Leeds Library

It turns out I have a bit of a library addiction, who would have guessed? During my time in the U.S. last fall, I found myself using libraries as co-working spaces. Now that I'm here in the U.K., I've developed a deep appreciation for their architecture and rich history. In this era of advanced technology, I sincerely hope that books and libraries never fade into obsolescence.

Right in the heart of the city center, amidst the bustling retail stores, stands the magnificent Leeds Library. This cherished institution boasts a remarkable literary legacy. Since its establishment in 1768, it proudly holds the title of the oldest surviving subscription library in the country. Within its walls, an extensive collection of books, manuscripts, and periodicals covering a diverse range of subjects awaits exploration. The elegant reading rooms and serene atmosphere of Leeds Library create a sanctuary for book enthusiasts, researchers, and students alike. It nurtures a profound sense of intellectual curiosity, encouraging visitors to embark on journeys of discovery within the embrace of its historic surroundings.

Corn Exchange

The Corn Exchange is a magnificent Victorian-era building originally built in 1864. It was used as a trading hub for corn merchants, and you can't miss the stunning domed roof and intricate ironwork. Today, it has been converted into a vibrant shopping center, with over 30 independent shops offering a wide range of goods, from designer clothing and accessories to homemade food and drinks.

It's a must-see for anyone looking for a unique shopping experience in Leeds. The architecture alone is so beautiful, but the variety of shops and boutiques is what really makes this place fun.

Olivia

In March, I wrote about being cast in a film through the Screen and Film School - a private university in Manchester. Waiting for the film to be edited and finalized is always the hardest, but they recently sent me the finished product!

They also told me it won "Best Film" at the Uni's End of the Year Awards! It was really fun to be a part of it.

In a dystopian future set in California 2063, Benny (a savvy tech broker) arranges a meeting with a grubby, sleazy Hollywood producer (Alfred) to try and sell him a new, state-of-the-art digital hologram (Olivia.) He ends up facing a disturbing dilemma that he never expected.

Finally...

I've glad to be back in Leeds and excited for a fun summer adventure. There are lots of things to do here, and I can't wait to explore the beautiful landscapes of North England outside the city.

My Airbnb feels familiar and comfortable, which makes me happy. Leeds has become like a second home to me, and I appreciate how welcoming it always is. I'm really looking forward to the adventures ahead and making this summer in Leeds one that I'll never forget.

Hello from Manchester, England!

It’s springtime in England - and one way I can tell is because my allergies are acting up! 🤧 But, the trees are in bloom, the grass is green, and the temperatures are rising.

During the second month of my travel stays, I have usually found my groove. That is certainly the case here. I'm comfortable in my Airbnb, got the train schedules figured out, all settled in my daily co-working and gym routine, and it feels really good.

I've also had the chance to roam around a bit and explore more of Manchester. As I've already discovered, history is in my backyard. And on May 6th, current history was made here as well, with the Coronation of King Charles III.

The Coronation of King Charles III

The United Kingdom has recently witnessed a historic event with the coronation of its new king. The ceremony, held at Westminster Abbey, was a grand affair attended by numerous dignitaries from around the world.

Although I wasn't in London, there were many celebrations across the country, with street parties and parades being held to mark the occasion. The coronation marks the start of a new era in the history of the UK, and many are looking forward to seeing what the future holds under the new king's leadership. However, there was some varying opinions.

I interviewed some people for my podcast, and you can listen below!

John Rylands Institute and Library

I walk by The John Rylands Research Institute and Library here in Manchester every day, so I thought I’d stop in. It was founded in 1899 by Enriqueta Rylands in memory of her husband.

John Rylands, was a multimillionaire cotton manufacturer who profited from slave labor but also sold some "free-grown" cotton not produced by slave laborers - so there's that.

The Gothic-style building itself is an architectural masterpiece, featuring intricate stone carvings and stained glass windows. The library has an extensive collection of rare books and manuscripts including works by famous writers like Shakespeare and Charles Dickens.

You can even sit, plug in. and work for a while - definitely Harry Potter vibes going on here. But it’s a fun visit, and since it’s free to get in, I may come back!

Castlefield Viaduct

Castlefield Viaduct is a historic railway bridge (built in 1892) that spans across the River Irwell in Manchester, England. Today, the viaduct has been converted into a pedestrian and cycle path, offering stunning views of the city and its surroundings.

The viaduct is an impressive structure, with 27 arches stretching over 300 meters in length.

The viaduct has undergone extensive renovations in recent years, and it is now an iconic landmark in Manchester's urban landscape, attracting visitors from around the world. But, it's still a work in progress.

Finally...

Despite some occasional sneezing, runny nose, and watery eyes, I'm truly enjoying my time here. This summer, I'm headed to Leeds, which is only about 30 miles away from Manchester, but the atmosphere is slightly different. Nonetheless, it's still northern England, and there are numerous places to discover and visit.

As autumn is approaching, I'm starting to think about my next destination. While I have a few possibilities in mind, nothing is set in stone yet. I'm grateful for the opportunity to embark on this journey.

I really appreciate those who have been reading this blog. Thanks for following along!
