Farewell To England For Now

Hello from Leeds!

July is my last month in Leeds for a while, and I've made the most of it! I've gotten to know the city much better and now feel right at home here. With my allergies finally gone, it's been a wonderful month of simply enjoying the city, exploring Leeds Dock, strolling along the canal, and immersing myself in British culture.

Speaking of British culture, I had the most amazing Sunday roast that transported me back to the cozy wintery meals of my childhood. A day trip by train through the beautiful countryside was the perfect way to wrap up this chapter of my journey.

Here's how the month turned out!

The Traditional British Sunday Roast

The British Sunday roast has a long history dating back to medieval times. It is believed to have originated in the 15th century as a meal that brought families together after church on Sundays. Roast beef was traditionally the meat of choice, symbolizing wealth and prosperity. Over time, the Sunday roast evolved to include other meats such as lamb, chicken, and pork, accompanied by roasted potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, vegetables, and gravy.

During the industrial revolution in the 18th and 19th centuries, the Sunday roast became more accessible to the working class as meat became more affordable. Families would gather around the table on Sundays to enjoy a hearty meal together, reinforcing bonds and traditions.

Today, the British Sunday roast remains a beloved culinary tradition in the UK, with many families and pubs serving up variations of the classic meal. It continues to be a symbol of togetherness and comfort, bringing people together to share a delicious and satisfying meal at the end of the week.

Daytrip to York

One day, I took the train from Leeds to York - a historic city known for its medieval architecture, iconic York Minster, and well-preserved city walls. After a quick 30-minute journey through picturesque scenery, I arrived in York ready to explore. My first stop was the iconic York Minster. This majestic cathedral never fails to impress with its stunning architecture and rich history. Inside, I took a moment to light a candle in remembrance of those who have passed, a ritual that always fills me with a sense of peace and reverence. The beauty and solemnity of York Minster make it a must-visit for anyone in the area.

Next, I wandered through the Shambles, a charming area with narrow, medieval streets lined with timber-framed buildings, shops, and cafes. I treated myself to a delicious Danish cinnamon roll from a local bakery and enjoyed some lively street theater. For lunch, I visited the Earl Grey Tea Rooms, where I soaked in the old-world charm of this historic, timber-framed building. Though I opted for a vegetarian lasagne and a cold beer instead of tea, the experience was delightful. My journey continued at the York Castle Museum, where I was particularly captivated by the 1960s exhibits. After more wandering around the city center, I ended my visit with a refreshing beer at Pavement Vaults, a modern pub known for its extensive craft beer selection and tasty barbecue. It was the perfect end to a fantastic day in York.

Thackray Museum of Medicine

I had an amazing experience at the Thackray Museum of Medicine in Leeds! Housed in a stunning Victorian building with a grand stone façade and ornate arches, this museum blends the old and new to draw you in. From intricate medical instruments to fascinating everyday life artifacts, it offers an unparalleled glimpse into the past.

The amputation room's chilling displays of surgical tools, enhanced by dim lighting and graphic illustrations, reveal the harsh realities of pre-anesthesia surgery. The Thackray Museum isn’t just about learning; it’s an immersive experience that ignites a passion for health and medicine, leaving you with a deeper appreciation for the history and heroes who have shaped the field.

Finally...

Starting from August 1st, I have relocated to Cologne, Germany. I reflect with affection on the previous five months spent in the north of England, where I achieved a great deal and strengthened my connections.

However, what a transformation! I have just started to discover Germany, and I can already tell that this month will be full of incredible discoveries.

So far, the transportation system is marvelous...

I really appreciate those who have been reading this blog. Thanks for following along!

Wow, Bob. You are really getting to know the UK. Good for you. Are you ever thinking of settling there, maybe? Have a good time in Germany. Will you get down to the Black Forest? or stay mainly around Cologne. Another intersting time!
